“I don’t see him doing that very often” : Gary Lineker reveals what Victor Gyokeres is lacking as compared to Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Arsenal have had a tremendous first half of the season, as they are currently at the top of the PL Table. They are also sitting at the top of the UCL Table, with six wins from six matches, and are guaranteed a spot in the next round. However, one of their key problems this season has been to get their big money signing Victor Gyokeres among the goals.

The Swedish striker has been struggling for goals this season, registering five goals in the PL, and two goals in the UCL. Gary Lineker recently gave his two cents on the problems the Swede is facing currently, and what he is currently lacking. He believes that Gyokeres needs to show more hunger for goals, and make some early runs before a cross is being delivered into the box.

I’ve watched him (Gyokeres) quite closely the last few weeks and I think he’s like most strikers, is one that waits to see where it’s going, the ball, waits until it’s crossed and then attacks the space. That’s what defenders do, as a striker you got to gamble on where you think the ball might go and you go just as they’re about to cross it. You steal a march on the defender that way and lots of the time the ball won’t go there, but I don’t see him doing that very often,” Lineker said on the Rest is Football podcast.

On the other hand, Gary Lineker heaped praise on Dominic Calvert-Lewin who has been on a red-hot goal scoring form. His goals have helped Leeds United stay unbeaten in their last five league matches, which includes a victory over Chelsea, and a 3-3 against Liverpool. The English striker has now scored goals in six consecutive matches, putting him right among top goal scorers for this season.

Gary Lineker believes that Calvert-Lewin has shown that hunger for goals, highlighting his goal in the 1-1 draw against Sunderland on Sunday. “Dominic Calvert Lewin did a perfect example of how to do that for the Leeds goal at Sunderland, perfect. He didn’t wait and to see where it was going to go. He went right, I pulled away and then he sprinted at the near post and hoped that the ball would be delivered there and it was. I don’t see that too often from Gyokeres at present, the players that score big numbers will do that,” he added.
