“I think Roger Federer would be the perfect coach for Carlos Alcaraz” : Mats Wilander gives his opinion on Spaniard’s recent change in coaching staff

Carlos Alcaraz raised several eyebrows last month, when he parted ways with Juan Carlos Ferrero. This came on the back of another successful season, where the Spaniard won two Grand Slam titles. The six-time major winner announced that Samuel Lopez will be working with him for the first Slam of the year.
Tennis legend Mats Wilander gave his two cents on the situation, and believes that Carlos Alcaraz should hire a Grand Slam winner as his coach. He stated that someone who has already won a Grand Slam would have the experience required to coach Carlos Alcaraz.
Mats Wilander went on to state that Roger Federer would be an ideal coach for Carlos Alcaraz. He stated that the Swiss maestro could really help Carlos Alcaraz with parts of his game he is still not comfortable with. The Spaniard is unlikely to hire a full-time coach in the near future.
“And I think if you’re going to have another Grand Slam voice in mind, that voice should come from a player with a different style. When you talk about Murray and Carlos Alcaraz, there’s a similarity in their playing style. But if you take John McEnroe and then Carlos Alcaraz, you suddenly see a big difference,” said Wilander.
“Or if you take Stefan Edberg and Carlos Alcaraz, there’s a big difference. Or let’s take Roger Federer, for example. Now, we’re talking about someone who could really help Carlos Alcaraz with the part of his game he’s not so comfortable with. And I think Roger Federer would be the perfect coach for Carlos Alcaraz,” he added
Carlos Alcaraz competed in an exhibition match against Jannik Sinner in South Korea over the weekend, where he emerged victorious by a score-line of 7-5, 7-6. The Spaniard will compete at the 2026 Australian Open starting in a couple of days, as he looks to add the only Grand Slam missing from his tally.
