Holger Rune has been among the most exciting young prospects on the tour. The Dane who is currently recovering from a surgery gave his honest opinion on his struggles to match up with the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Holger Rune endured a very topsy-turvy 2025 season, where he could claim only one title in Barcelona. He defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the finals in straight sets. Holger Rune’s last appearance in 2025 came at the Stockholm Open in the semifinals, where he had to retire mid-match against Ugo Humbert.

After rupturing his Achilles tendon, he underwent a surgery last month, from which he is still continuing his recovery. While the 2026 season has started, the Dane is still on the sidelines, and is expected to be back soon.

Holger Rune stated that before his injury, he was ahead of the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. However, his lack of consistency, and lack of discipline has cost him in the race with the world’s best players. Both, Alcaraz and Sinner have won four Grand Slams each in the last two seasons, and are currently dominating men’s tennis.

“Before the injury, what set us apart was consistency. That’s pure discipline. A while ago, I was ahead of Carlos and Jannik, but I lost that advantage because I wasn’t consistent. Perhaps that was what had to happen to me, the natural evolution, I needed to adjust my discipline. My ambitions remain the same, I’m going to come back hungry,” said Holger Rune.

Holger Rune also revealed how he felt after his injury at the Stockholm Open last year. The Dane stated that initially he thought he could finish the match with some taping, however, it was only after the physio came to the court and warned him about the serious injury, did he withdraw from the match.

“I felt as if the ground collapsed beneath me; it was like being in the middle of an earthquake. The first thing I thought was that there was something wrong with the court. It didn’t hurt, my foot simply detached from my body. It was a really strange experience,” said Holger Rune.
