“If Zverev won the 2020 US Open final, he would already have three, four, or five Grand Slams today” : Boris Becker gives bold statement on German’s Grand Slam drought

Alexander Zverev is among the most consistent players on the tour over the last six to seven years. The German burst onto the scene as a promising youngster almost a decade ago, and it was certain that he would at least win a couple of Major titles.

However, after almost 10 years of his professional debut, Alexander Zverev is yet to lift a Grand Slam title. He came agonizingly close in the 2020 US Open finals, where he held a two set lead over his good friend Dominic Thiem in the finals. He lost the finals in five sets in the fifth set tiebreaker, in what was Dominic Thiem’s first and last Grand Slam title.

Alexander Zverev reached the finals of the 2024 French Open, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in another five-set battle. This was again followed by a straight sets defeat to Jannik Sinner in the finals of the Australian Open last year.

Boris Becker who has often been criticial about Alexander Zverev in the past, stated that had the German won the 2020 US Open final, he could have had over four to five Grand Slams to his name already.

“In my view, if he’d won that final, he would already have three, four, or five Grand Slams today. That match would have unlocked him,” Becker said.

After Zverev’s strong start to the season in 2025, the German endured a disappointing season which saw him get knocked out in the earlier rounds of Grand Slam. He was also knocked out in the first round of Wimbledon.

Alexander Zverev was handed a tricky first round draw at the 2026 Australian Open, which saw him face Canadian Gabriel Diallo. The German survived a scare to see off the big serving Canadian in four sets, despite dropping the first set.
