“There’s a bit of a difference in upbringing” : Holger Rune slams Spanish crowd after shock Davis Cup defeat

Spain defeated Denmark in the second round of Davis Cup qualifiers to secure a spot in the final round. Heading into the final round, Spain were down 2-0 with all to do on the second day. However, the hosts turned it around on the final day, with Pedro Martinez and Munar winning their Doubles tie.

It was Pedro Martinez who saved a match point to defeat Holger Rune in three sets in fourth match of the tie. Eventually, Pablo Carreno Busta finished the job by defeating Moller in the final match in straight sets. Holger Rune was clearly upset after his defeat to Pedro Martinez, and refused to shake hands with the chair umpire.

However, he did shake hands with his opponent, and Spanish Davis Cup team coach David Ferrer. At the press conference, the Dane explained his decision to ignore the official. “He didn’t deserve to be shaken by me; he did a bad job, made a lot of mistakes, and made strange decisions,” said Rune.

Holger Rune also slammed the Spanish crowd, criticizing their behavior during their tie. He also stated that when they played Serbia, the atmosphere in the stadium was very really good, and he made a comparison between the two fanbases’ upbringing.

I just thought that there’s a difference between Danish and Spanish manners. When we played against Serbia, the atmosphere was also absolutely amazing, but there was clearly more respect. There’s a bit of a difference in upbringing,” said Rune.

David Ferrer also called out Holger Rune for his behavior during his clash against Pedro Martinez. The Spaniard pointed out that he cursed the fans, and also hurled two balls into the crowd, for which he was not penalized.

Listen to me. In the first set, he cursed the fans, and then he threw two balls, and you didn’t even call a penalty. And now I’m encouraging him, and this guy comes to me to say something. Don’t even think about saying anything to me! I’m speaking to you in Spanish because you understand me perfectly. When he hits that ball, it has to be penalty ball, and he said **** off to the crowd,” said Ferrer.
