“‘You can’t run faster with brand new spikes?’ We’re just way more talented men,” Usain Bolt talks about current state of Men’ 100m field after Seville takes gold

Usain Bolt remains the fastest man in the world, as the eight-time Olympic champion holds the world record in both the men’s 100m and 200m sprints. The Jamaican set the famous record of 9.58s in the 100m sprint at the World Championships in Berlin in 2009.

Recently, Oblique Seville claimed the gold medal in the 100m sprint in the ongoing World Championships in Tokyo. He became the first Jamaican after Bolt to claim the title in this event. His countryman Kishane Thompson claimed the silver medal, completing a Jamaican 1-2. Olympic champion Noah Lyles could only settle for a bronze.

Seville clocked an impressive personal best of 9.77s to claim the victory, which makes him only the 23rd fastest athlete. Usain Bolt was recently asked about the inability of modern sprinters to get close to his record. The Jamaican explained that his era of sprinters were clearly better than the current field, who are unable to match their times despite having modern footwear.

“You want the real answer? We’re just more talented. That’s all I’m saying. Of course, it shows when it comes to the men. You can see the women are different. The young women are coming up. They’re running faster and faster times [with the new shoes]. I’m just saying, ‘You can’t run faster with brand new spikes?’ We’re just way more talented men,” said Bolt.

Usain Bolt hung up his boots in 2017, after winning eight Olympic medals, and 11 World championship titles. There is certainly some truth in the statement made by the Jamaican, as his era had some of the best sprinters the world has ever witnessed. The likes of Yohan Blake, Tyson Gay, Justin Gatlin have recorded some of the fastest times in this event.
