“He didn’t have the discipline that was required”: Novak Djokovic gives an honest verdict on Nick Kyrgios’ career
Nick Kyrgios has been on the sidelines for the longest time. The Australian was sidelined for 18 months, however, he did manage to make his comeback on the tour this season. Despite his return to the court, he has unable to be actively involved, competing in only four single tournaments so far, claiming a sole victory.
Nick Kyrgios and Aryna Sabalenka have confirmed that they would face off in the ‘Battle of Sexes,’ an epic encounter that would take place after almost half a century. The dates and location for the fixture is yet to be finalized, with Sabalenka hinting at a date before the 2025 Australian Open.
Novak Djokovic hopes that Nick Kyrgios is able to return to the tour. The Serbian stated that Kyrgios never had the discipline to reach his true potential. The duo had faced off against each other in the Wimbledon finals in 2022, where the Serb claimed a victory in four sets.
“Unfortunately, he didn’t have the discipline that was required, but if he had 30 percent – and he has five percent – he’d be Top 10 easily. He played a Wimbledon final without a warm-up, without serious training, without a coach, and beat all of us at the top.” said Djokovic.

Patrick Mouratoglou commended Novak Djokovic for reaching all four semifinals of Grand Slams this season. The Serb will face Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals of the 2025 US Open. Novak Djokovic has defeated Carlos Alcaraz in each of their last two encounters, including the gold medal match at the Paris Olympics.
Patrick Mouratoglou favors Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal clash, tipping it 55-45 in the Spaniard’s favor. “The fact that he reached the semi-final of all four Grand Slams this year shows that he’s still there, even though he got injured, even though his motivation was low — he was still in the semi-finals of the majors. I mean, tennis-wise, Carlos is better; he’s always impressive. But there is one little extra this year at the US Open. I would say it’s 55/45 for Carlos, because there are question marks about Novak’s motivation,” said Mouratoglou.
Novak Djokovic defeated Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals of the 2025 US Open in four sets. The Serb has had a great run at the US Open so far, defeating the likes of Jan-Lennard Struff and Cameron Norrie. Carlos Alcaraz has also had a dominant run at the US Open, reaching the semifinals without dropping a single set.
