“I’ve been playing poorly in New York for two years” : Alexander Zverev gives honest verdict after US Open exit

Alexander Zverev was knocked out in the only the third round of the 2025 US Open. The German was defeated by Felix Auger Aliassime in four sets, as his hunt for an elusive Grand Slam title continues. Seeded third at the 2025 US Open, Zverev was among the top contenders to at least reach the last four.

Alexander Zverev gave an honest verdict about his Grand Slam performances this season, and his run at the US Open in the last two years. The German reached his first ever Grand Slam final here at the Flushing Meadows in 2020, when he was just a set away to claim the title against Dominic Thiem.

“The truth is, I have to improve a lot next year; I have to find something that allows me to be a better player here because I’ve been playing poorly in New York for two years,” Zverev said.

Alexander Zverev started off his season with a runner-up finish at the 2025 Australian Open, where he lost to Jannik Sinner in the finals in straight sets. This was his third Grand Slam final loss in the last five years.

Alexander Zverev’s struggles continue in 2025

Alexander Zverev has had a very challenging 2025 season, both personally and professionally. The German revealed that he was dealing with some mental health problems since the start of the year, which has also affected his performances on the court.

With only one title to his name in 2025, the German has indeed endured a very challenging year. He could only make it to the third rounds at the US and French Open, and a first round defeat at Wimbledon.

However, there is still plenty to play for in the final quarter of the season. Alexander Zverev has shown that he can be a pretty decent player on indoor hard courts over the years. He will also feature at the 2025 Laver Cup, representing Team Europe alongside Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune and Casper Ruud.
