Piers Morgan apologizes to Novak Djokovic after ‘cheat and liar’ remarks in 2022
Piers Morgan is making the rounds in the sporting community over the past couple of weeks. After his blockbuster interview with footballing great Cristiano Ronaldo last week, the English broadcaster released a trailer of his upcoming interview with tennis icon Novak Djokovic.
Piers Morgan starts off the interview by apologizing to Novak Djokovic after his controversial remarks against him in 2022. The Serb was the subject of public fury after he was deported from Australia in 2022. Hs refusal to get the covid-19 vaccination meant that he was denied entry into Australian borders, and denied participation from the Australian Open that year.
Piers Morgan was among the several renowned personalities to criticize the Serbian, and called him a cheat and a liar. The covid-19 pandemic was still a big issue back then, and Novak Djokovic’s vaccination status challenged the wrath of the sporting community. Referring to his comments made almost four years ago, Piers Morgan said, “I’m gonna start by making an apology”.
Novak Djokovic talks about Jannik Sinner’s doping ban
Novak Djokovic spoke on several topics in the interview, but the focus was on his comments on Jannik Sinner’s three-month doping man at the start of the year. The Italian tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid clostebol last year, and after almost a year of drama, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) handed him a three-month suspension..
Novak Djokovic believes that Jannik Sinner would not have intentionally used the steroid, but raises questions over how the matter was handled. He also questioned the timeline of the ban, which was handed in such a way that the Italian did not miss the French Open.
Novak Djokovic also stated that just like deportation from Australia, the doping scandal will always be a part of Jannik Sinner’s tennis career. The Serbian withdrew from the Nitto ATP Finals just on the eve of the tournament, after he claimed the Hellenic Championship with a three-set win over Lorenzo Musetti. The Serb has quashed retirement rumors for now, stating that he would like to compete till the 2028 LA Olympics.
